Integration (english)

The goal is to ensure that children and young people who have come to Mecklenburg-Vorpommern from other countries are quickly integrated and can successfully begin or continue their education here.

They need special support, especially to learn the German language quickly. For this purpose, various regulations have been developed for Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.

The schooling of students whose native language is not German is regulated in the relevant administrative regulations for Mecklenburg- Western Pomerania. On this basis, the educational concept of the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania is adopted annually.

Since the 2022/2023 school year, students whose native language is not German and are newly admitted to school, are generally educated in preliminary classes at selected local schools. The preliminary classes are set up across all year groups and are intended to prepare children and young people for further school attendence in Germany.

At general schools there are options for intensive support and accompanying language support lessons „German as a Second Language“ (DaZ) at the local schools with preliminary classes.

The digital general education state school of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania offers daily live online lessons to promote language skills in the area of German as a second language. This is aimed at students whose native language is not German. It is particularly suitable for learning in preliminary classes. The language levels correspond to the „Common European Framework of Reference“ (CEFR).

In Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, students with a migration background have the opportunity to prove the German language skills they have acquired in class in an exam (DSD and DSD Pro).

The assessment test gives students whose native language is not German the opportunity to have the official language of their country of origin recognized as a first or second foreign language after their level of knowledge has been determined.

Pupils who have not yet been literate with Latin letters take part in literacy measures in coordination with the state education authorities or the school supervision departement for vocational schools.

It is possible to carry out a formal recognition procedure. If the school is to be continued in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, there will be no formal recognition process. The school management, which coordinates with the legal guardians or the adult student, decides on integration into a general education school.
